A Way With Words

Button-Sm150 Joy at Cupid’s Charm is hosting a Blog Party about blogging. She invited us to write about why we love blogging. What a great idea. When you’re through here, be sure to head on over to Cupid’s Charm to read about what inspires others to blog.

I’ve always loved to write. My major at the University of Arkansas was English and Journalism, and I taught high school for 15 years. During that time I was the advisor to a number of award winning high school publications. It was a great outlet for my creative juices, and it was so rewarding to help students bring an idea to fruition. I’ve even had several former students go on to successful careers in journalism.

I “retired” from teaching in 1984 when we moved from Little Rock to Texarkana. At that point, I channeled my creative side into a craft shop that I owned with a friend. There we taught decorative painting on everything from wood to fabric. Later when we moved to Birmingham I found another outlet when I began building and remodeling houses.

However, that itch to write remained. So when our youngest son Ben suggested that I start a blog, I needed no further encouragement. In fact, my first blog entry in August, 2008, which you can read HERE, was about how my blog started.

Fayetteville Trip 007

Our youngest son Ben, who prompted me to start my blog, followed in his mom’s footsteps and majored in journalism at the University of Arkansas. As a student, he was editor of The Traveler, the school newspaper.

For a long time, the only readers on my blog were friends and family. I was dying for more people to “discover” me. It was through Laurie, who is a friend of my sister-in-law Susie, that I found a way to direct traffic to my blog. Until I “met” Laurie, I had never heard of a Meme. Now I have a whole new group of friends and 43 followers instead of just three. Some day I hope to meet some of you for real.

So that’s my story. What’s yours?

An a good story it is, you sure have a handsome young man, there. I have found memes are a great way to make new friends. I love reading your stories.
I'm afraid I have no formal training in writing, hated English in school too many rules..lol..I just write what comes to mind and follow very few rules as I'm sure you can tell.
Thanks for sharing

That is awesome!!! I started as a fluke. I was trying to find a way to put all of the articles I had written for magazines and photos in one location. That way for freelance folks could have a place to see what I had done.
I didnt even know what a blog was at the time. I spent all day creating it, when my tech savy husband came home from work I was so proud to show what I had done.
Today though, my blog is all fun. It comes with its mispellings and slang, it is Leigh raw, LOL. I enjoy it and have met and made some dear friends in doing it. This summer is my two year anniversary!

Kathy, thanks so much for the mention. I'm so glad your handsome son, Ben got you into blogging, and I'm so glad that Susie got you into Blogville! Blogging IS such a wonderful outlet, and you have too much to share to just have family members reading your blog. I enjoy your "way with words". laurie

I see that writing runs in the family! I also got inspired to do a blog from a cousin who had one. It made it easier to have someone I knew that had been there already to offer some tips. I'm still new at blogging though and still learning.
Thanks for sharing your story today, I'll be back to visit soon!

It's amazing how many people got into blogging and found it was so much more than they expected. That's what happened to me. It's a great place to be creative.
Happy Blog Party Day!

I discovered blogging somewhere online. At first it was an extension of my business, not my business it secondary and blogging takes most of my time. Surely the eonomic climate makes this possible now, but I will have to put my business hat back on soon.

Hi Kathy, like you I used to get so excited when I got over three comments. It really is fun and I am glad you stopped by. Really cute blog dress. I just got a new one..and even doing that is fun!
At 72 my story is too long to even tell. I just found out what a Meme was yesterday. I finally had the nerve to ask. Hmmm..now what did she tell me? I have already forgotten. :) I'm NOT kidding..I have to go back and read.
Listen...not sure getting a lot of traffic is good. I mean..It's GOOD but how to you visit every body back??
Makes me tired just thinking about it.

Hi Kathy. I am sorry I showed up for the blogging party late, but due to being very sick I started late and couldn't miss visiting everyone. Your blog is beautiful and I love that your handsome son encouraged you to begin blogging. You must be very proud of him for following in your footsteps. I love your photos of the ocean, it is my favorite place to be. I look forward to returning and following you on your journey. Have a great weekend and you are welcome to visit my blogs anytime! Also thanks for the story about the broken china as it renews my belief that most people are good people. Happy blogging!

Hey Kathy.

Loved this post. And you are correct, our stories (as are many others) are so similar.

I too never knew what a meme was until about 1-month ago. It's not that I blog for attention, but seeing that my family hardly ever posts any comments, it sure is fun to have others validate or provide ideas that I haven't thought of regarding a posting!

Happy Blogging Party and thanks for dropping by,
Valerie
