Deer Resistant?

verbena 001 When I returned from a week of helping my son and his family move from Annapolis, Maryland, to Savannah, Georgia, I found my perennial pink verbena in full bloom. I’ve had this flower in my garden before, but it’s been a while.

When I saw it at Lowe’s this spring with the words “Deer Resistant” stamped on the tag, I was quick to snatch some up. There are so many things that I can’t grow because the deer feed in my yard every night. They eat the day lilies to the ground before they ever produce any blooms. Knock out roses, hydrangeas of all varieties, hostas and azaleas are all favorites of the deer. And the poor pansies get pulled up roots and all just as quickly as they’re planted.

A couple of weeks after I planted the verbena I went out one morning to find all of the blossoms snipped off. I was soooooooo disappointed. Now they’re blooming profusely. It will be interesting to see how long the blooms last.

bijw9y Happy Pink Saturday to one and all. Family obligations have prevented me from posting for a while, so it’s nice to be back. Please head over to Beverly’s at How Sweet the Sound to see what else is in the PINK.

Those little buggers,LOL! Maybe you should do some online investigating to find some plants that are deer resistant. My parents had a similar problem when they lived at the beach. They would even jump the 6 foot fence. I hope you get to enjoy your blooms a little longer and have a Happy Pink Saturday!

We use to have a terrible deer problem, they didn't bother the flowers too much cause they had a picnic in the garden every night, peas, butter beans, corn, okra, tomatoes, nothing was safe until we got our German Shepard TiTi,then they didn't dare step foot on his territory...lol...for several nights I'd hear him barking and growling and hear him running off in the distance still barking, next morning there would be deer tracks and maybe a tomato on the ground but nothing ate, finally they took the hint and didn't come back. He's been gone for a yr now but they haven't ventured back...maybe they moved on to someone else garden. I hope so. DH would love to put them in the freezer.
Your flowers are beautiful. Have missed you, welcome back.

Well they are gorgeous!!! Maybe the first batch made the deer have tummy aches and they'll think twice before eating them again!

those are beautiful pink flowers!!!

we don't have a deer problem, but rather a rabbit issue. they ate my gerber daisies this year!!! (and the daises were a gift from my kiddies for mother's day)

Kathy, I share the same problem with you. Unfortunately, a hungry deer will eat anything. They will go for years and not touch a specific plant then it suddenly becomes an all you can eat buffet. The labels really should read "dear resistant maybe."
Have a wonderful weekend.

No deer for me...I live in the city...sigh.

♥Have a wonderful weekend. Finally warm and sunny here, hope your neck of the woods is just as pink-a-licious as mine♥

Oh those deer! We have them, too, along with bunny rabbits and woodchucks! So far they haven't done much damage (knock on wood) but it is true, deer resistant means "cross your fingers that they aren't too hungry!" Happy Pink Saturday!

Happy Pink Saturday Kathy! The pink verbena is beautiful! I forgot that the deer don't like verbena ! I'm so glad I read your post. We have deers come by occasionally and they eat anything they can reach! Now I can put containers of verbena on the wall!

Thanks for sharing! Enjoy your weekend!

Hey look! Bambi dessert!!!

Even if the deer don't like it they still put it up and spit it out. Frustrating!

My pictures...mostly come from web searches and magazines. I am a magazine feen. (not a speller;-)

Hope you are having a cool restful weekend.

That is so frustrating. So far we haven't had trouble with deer but my in-laws have a terrible time. Hope

Deer? Not exactly a problem in London... What an interesting post. Love your verbena - mine's yellow (or is it St John's Wart - can never remember. It's a bush, anyway)

Happy Pink Saturday!

It's so frustrating to buy plants just for the deer to eat!
