Putting a Shine on Things

Pic_for_Body_of_Blog3 It's a new week and time to show the world what wonderful transformations we made last week.  Susan is hosting over at Between Naps on the Porch, and she's got an amazing metamorphosis happening right on her front porch.  It reminded me so much of THIS POST that I read on another blog a few months ago, only this one had a different outcome.

So what amazing transformation took place in my house this week?  Well, I took this…

silver 003

and turned this…

silver 002

into this.

silver 006

I know it doesn't seem like much, but you can probably tell that I've been putting this little chore off for months.  Heck, it may have been a year or more since I polished the silver service.  I just kept telling myself that slightly tarnished silver was soooooo shabby chic.

But even I have to admit that this was way beyond shabby chic.  In fact, it had gotten to the point that whenever I served a meal in the formal dining room, I just tucked the silver service under the sideboard.  I guess I thought nobody would notice it.  So now it looks like new, and I can scratch that chore off my list for another year.  Well, maybe I won't wait that long this time.

I know that is a lot of work! I inherited my mom's silver punch bowl and cups because my other sisters didn't want to polish it!
It took me a week, and quite a few jars of polish!!!
I cheat now though, and keep it wrapped so it doesn't tarnish!

I have a love hate relationship with silver... I love it when it's polished, and I even love it when it is a little tarnished, but I hate when polishing is overdue, and of course, I hate the mess of polishing. That's why I only do it about once a year - :).

I have a whole closet you can come help polish if you get tired of polishing your own! Seriously, nothing looks better than beautifully polished silver!

That is a wonderful transformation! It looks so sparkly and ready for a good use!
I read your profile. I am the mother of four boys + one husband, so you can say I am outnumbered quite a bit too. Maybe I will get some "PINK" in the family some day!
Blessings,

I think it looks beautiful both ways, but I could be partial to the shabby. Less work and all! Silver does look beautiful all gleaming and shiny at Christmas time though!

Gorgeous! If I'd been there, I would have done it for you. This sounds perverse, but I love polishing silver. That's about the only domestic chore I don't loathe. :)

gmta-I just polished silver that came out of storage. It has been sitting on the countertop waiting for me and I finally did it yesterday. It's alot of work! I'm sure you burn calories polishing silver! But it does look beautiful when it's finished...your set is lovely.

Happy Monday!

I have a silver trophy cup sitting in my diningroom hutch that needs to be polished. I polished it last year but it didn't turn out as sparkly as yours. Then I bought one of the plates that you add washing soda powder to and it is supposed to "magically" remove all the tarnish without having to polish.

I am going to give it a try and see if it really works. If it does, I'll post on a met monday and share my secrets.

My goodness, what a difference! Well worth the time and effort.

RE the music on blogs - you won't believe what a chore and a MISERY it is visiting some of the Pink Saturday crowd - that Playlist widget being the worst offender. 5 minutes (or more) for the page to load, just to tell me I can't have access (as if I wanted it anyway) to listen to the music due to UK/US copyright issues. This freezes the screen, so I can't escape from the blog, delete it, or even go offline and cancel the whole thing. Then another 5 minutes or so for the comments page to load up, if they chose the comments to appear below the posts (and I'm on 8meg broadband!)

This is making a really pleasant time a total misery - nice blogs or not, I'll be making a list so I can avoid them. It wouldn't be so bad if the screen didn't hang and block me from doing anything else.

I'm so pleased I found out how to set the music widgets to play only when someone wants to listen to them - just hope people read my post and act on it....

Kathy: This is beautiful! I don't love polish silver either, but it is so worth it when you are done! I wonder about the stuff you can "supposedly" just dip it down into. Probably too good to be true!

This looks great!

I've been rationalizing not polishing my silver as well. But mine is getting to the point that I need to polish it. Do you want to come over & polish? I'll supply the Wright's. Somehow I didn't think you would. Oh well, I tried.

Your set turned out fabulous. Definitely ready for top billing now.
